Low Libido and Thyroid Problems

The honest answer first

Yes — thyroid function and desire are genuinely connected, and it's one of the first things a proper assessment should rule out before concluding anything else. Your thyroid regulates metabolism, energy, mood and hormone balance throughout the body; when it's underactive or overactive, desire is often one of several things that quietly shifts alongside it.

The two directions

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) tends to bring fatigue, low mood, weight changes, feeling cold, and low libido as part of a broader slowdown — desire often returns as one of the general symptoms of "everything feels like too much effort."

An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is less commonly linked to low libido specifically, but the anxiety, weight loss, and physical symptoms it causes can affect desire indirectly, through the same stress and body-discomfort pathways that affect desire generally.

Why this is easy to miss

Thyroid symptoms overlap heavily with things already easy to explain away — tiredness gets blamed on being busy, low mood on stress, low libido on "just life." A simple blood test is what actually separates a thyroid cause from everything else, which is exactly why it belongs in a proper assessment rather than being guessed at from symptoms alone.

Who this is worth checking for

  • Low libido alongside unexplained fatigue, weight change, or feeling persistently cold or overheated
  • A personal or family history of thyroid conditions
  • Low libido that hasn't responded to addressing other obvious causes (stress, medication, relationship factors)

What happens if it is your thyroid

Thyroid conditions are generally very treatable — often with straightforward medication that restores normal levels — and desire, along with energy and mood, frequently improves once thyroid function is properly balanced. This is one of the more genuinely fixable causes on the list, which is exactly why ruling it in or out matters early.
